Jean Gesner Henry (May 10, 1925 - January 29, 1998), popularly known as Coupé Cloué, was a Haïtian singer, guitarist, and bandleader. He was known for defining a style of Haïtian compas music he called kompa mamba, and for the sometimes bawdy innuendo used in his songs. During his career, he was one of Haïti's most prominent musicians, and found much success in West Africa as well.

Originally the first Haitian band was Issa Sahiel it was created in the capital of Haiti (Port Au Prince) in 1940. Some of the original members were the teenager Guy Durosier, René D’or, Nono Trouillot, Ti Roro, Lumame Casimir, Raoul Guillaume and maestro Issa el Sahiel. The last time the group preformed was in 1961.In 1943 in Port Au Prince, Pierre Riché, René D’or, Farrat Pierre, Vainney Dennervil formed the Jazz Des Jeunes band. The band became very popular in the Caribbean they traveled to Porto Rico, France, Panama, Dominican Republic, Columbia and Cuba. On May 17, 1958 Jazz Des Jeunes performed in the Pan American Festival in New York at the Howard University and received the first and best performing jazz band award, in 1972 the band relocated to New York.
On July 27, 1948 Septentrional was created. Originally Issa Sahiel ,Jazz Des Jeunes and Septentrional started out as salsa, meringue, blues and jazz style bands. Then Konpa Direct rhythm formed on July 26; 1955 by saxophone players Nemours Jean Baptiste and Weber Sicot. Initial band members included Jean Baptiste, Julien Paul, Edzer Duroseau, Mozard Duroseau, Monfort Jean Baptiste. Sicot and Nemours became the two major powers in the Haitian music history, through the original konpa direct band “Coronto International”.
In 1956, Sicot left the band to form another Konpa band Latino in 1962 they changed the name to Kadans Rampa and in 1969 the band broke up. Nemours would rename Coronto as Ensemble Au Calbasse, and later as Ensemble Nemours Jean-Baptiste. An intense rivalry developed between the two, though they remained good friends. Nemours played a popular, improvised, mambo-influenced style called kompa direct, while Sicot's sophisticated, Cuban-influenced Kadans Rampa was inaccessible to mainstream listeners.
In 1968, Sicot left Haiti to tour the United States and Europe. Nemours stayed behind to entertain a nation that embraced Konpa with their heart and soul. After leaving Haiti, Sicot left a void in the musical scene. In 1971, he returned with his first solo album, “Just for you” However, it was too late for him to recapture a public that religiously fell in love with Konpa.
Nemours permanently imposed Konpa as the dominant form of music in Haiti. This was evident based on the fact that most upcoming bands seemed to adapt to Konpa rather than Cadence Rampa. For instance, Les Shleu-Shleu, a very successful band in the 70’s era, followed Nemours’ trend and performed with him on several occasions.
André Romain, José Tavernier and Jacki Duroseau created Ibo Combo in Petion Ville in 1962. On December 25, 1965, Les Shleu-Shleu was created in Port Au Prince by Smith Jean Baptiste, and Edward Crèvecoeur. Les Shleu-Shleu recorded and released several great albums the fans will never forget.
Les Fantaisiste band was created in Carrefour a middle class town in the capital. At this time we have no information for the bands Le Samba Jazz, Super 9, Les Légendaires, Afro Combo, Sambo Kreol, Super Soline, Les Cougars, Latino D’Haiti, Blue Stars, Les Vikings, Shupa Shupa and Natif Natal etc...
During the 70’s, Nemours and Sicot traveled often to New-York, Miami and the Caribbean to expose Konpa to the international community. In the meantime ShleShleu , Tabou Combo, Les Difficiles, Skah Shah , Bossa Combo, Les Loup Noirs, Shouga Combo, Tropicana, Septentrional, Magnum Band, D.P Express, Scorpio, Freres Dejeans, Coupe Cloue , Ibo Combo, Dixie Band and Djet-x etc… were making their presence in Haiti. Due to their absences, Nemours and Sicot became less visible in Haiti and the above bands took over the industry
Despite all of their contributions to Haitian music, Nemours and Sicot are not getting the recognition they deserve, and there isn't much being done to preserve their legacy while producers and records companies continue to produce and sell Konpa. Nemours and Sicot were musical icons and brought joy to their fanatics and contributed greatly to the evolution of Konpa.
Nemours and Sicot are to Konpa what Elvis Presley and James Brown are to classical music and Michael Jackson to pop culture. As the heart and soul of Haitian music across the globe, they were not just musicians; they were entertainers, equivalent to the class of Frank Sinatra, Charles Aznavour. Nemours and Sicot showcased their talents in live concerts throughout Haiti and internationally. Sicot and Nemours formed one body and soul with their respective bands on stage, and they were true ambassadors of the Haitian culture at home and abroad.
Many international artists perform famous folk lyrics and Konpa songs without giving recognition to the Haitian artists who created them. For example: the Haitian classic, "Yellow Bird", by Arthur Lyman released by MCA Records in 1992.
